Abstract

Background. Leadership in any organization is a complement to formal management. The presence of a clear idea about the leadership nature is necessary for the development of leadership potential in the work collective. Carrying out such a type of research
as the questionnaire is most suitable for solving this problem, in order to detect and eliminate the misconceptions that have developed in the team. The purpose of this article is to investigate the problem of understanding the leadership essence by the personnel of the
organization.
Materials and methods. Methods of terminological analysis, comparative analysis, generalizations were used to substantiate the essence of the leadership concept in the organization. The survey method, in particular the questionnaire, was used to conduct a
survey of the organization's staff's opinion on leadership.
Results. In this article the authors analyzed the main definitions and directions related to the study of leadership research, as
well as the leader – one of the most important members of the working collective, who is able to influence the result of the main organizational activity. Based on the study of various scientists’ points of view, the essence of the leadership notion was singled out concerning the sphere of personnel management and labor relations, as well as the basic necessary competences are listed of the individual who is the leader in the organization. The article also contains the results of the authors' study of the leadership understanding by workers in the organization.
Conclusions. The economic and social research of the employees in the operating production enterprise carried out by the authors made it possible to draw conclusions about the insufficient development and use of leadership potential in the organization
and the need to change the motivation system.
